Various factors like excessive use of tea, coffee, soft drinks, tobacco or
hereditary factors may contribute to discoloration of teeth. It may also
appear as apart of the natural ageing process of men and women. The process
of reversing this discoloration to teeth by using artificial means such as
tooth whitening gels and bleaches is known as teeth whitening that forms
part of the cosmetic dentistry.
The dentists adopt different procedures for the purpose of removing
pigmentation from the enamel of the teeth of the patients approaching him.
While some of the teeth whitening programmes require the help of a doctor to
get it applied on the teeth some other products such as teeth whitening
gels can be applied without the help of a dentist. By using these gels
one can restore the lost luster and beauty of his teeth back with out much
effort.
The active ingredients of almost all the teeth whitening gels are the
carbamide peroxide. This oxidising chemical if used in the allowable
concentration (10% concentration) will help to remove stains from the enamel
of the teeth. Most of these teeth whitening gels that can be used at home
make use of syringes to apply the gel on the teeth.
The most commonly used chemicals in addition to carbamide peroxide in these
whitening gels are fluoride and potassium nitrate. These chemicals are good
to minimise the sensitivity of the teeth while using the whitening agent on
the teeth. Teeth whitening agents now come in different strength for one to
choose a product that matches the intensity of the stain or pigmentation on
his teeth. Normally the effect of the gel will depend on the concentration
of the peroxide and the length of time a person keeps the gel on his teeth.
It is the adhesive nature of these gels that keep them sticking to the teeth
of the person using the gel. A quality teeth whitening gel will
contain better adhesive system that prevents leakage from within the tray.
The degree of stain removal depends on the adherence level of the gel and
the leakage from the try.
Normally a teeth whitening gel kit will contain the gel, syringe and
mouth trays and a leaflet that contains the instructions to be followed by
the person using the gel. One has to be read all the instructions contained
in the leaflet before he proceeds to apply teeth whitening gel on his teeth.
If possible it is always better to consult a dentist prior to the home
treatment by using a teeth whitening gel to know more about the use and the
precautions to be taken to avoid complications.
The instructions to place the gel inside the pocketed areas of the tray can
be found in the leaflet. The filled try can then be fitted over the teeth of
the person using the gel. The excess gel should be removed carefully.
Overnight treatment by using the gel may require six to eight night to get
the result from using the whitening gel. After use the try should be cleaned
thoroughly by using a tooth brush.
