Carbamide peroxide or urea peroxide is compound consisting of hydrogen
peroxide and urea. This oxidising agent is the common component in almost
all the teeth whitening agents used by the cosmetic dentists. Pure carbamide
peroxide will be seen in white coloured crystal form or in powder. This
water soluble chemical in its pure form will contain approximately thirty
five percent of hydrogen peroxide in it.
Hydrogen peroxide, the active ingredient in the carbamide peroxide is a good
bleaching agent that can remove stains within the tooth enamel. The peroxide
components in the teeth whitening formulas will break down to remove the
pigmented components from the teeth of the person using the carbamide
peroxide based teeth whitening agent. The different methods of using
carbamide peroxide to whiten teeth include night guard application at home
and surgical application. The effect of the bleaching by using peroxide will
depend on the length of time that it was kept on the teeth and the
concentration of the chemical used to make the whitening formula. Most
commonly dentists use 22% of carbamide peroxide in the tooth bleaching
agents.
Though not free from side effects dentists are of the opinion that utilising
a ten percent concentration of carbamide peroxide teeth whitener is safe to
be used by a person. Majority of the dentists all over the world suggest
tray teeth whitening system that contains carbamide peroxide to their
patients. Use of ten percent carbamide peroxide based teeth whiteners also
have found to cause less or no damage to the microhardness or mineral
content of the enamel surface of the teeth.
Carbamide peroxide is also used by the manufactures of hair dyes to make
hair dyes with oxidising agents. It can also be seen in the medications use
to treat the problem of ear wax build up.
This chemical by nature is a skin and eye irritant. One has to be extremely
cautious while using carbamide peroxide contained hair dye to avoid contact
of the hair dye with scalp, skin and eye. Contact with skin may sometimes
cause burns on the skin resulting in serious trouble later as these are a
little dangerous
A 6.5% concentration of carbamide peroxide will normally be used to make
medications to remove hair wax build up. Use of this solution will help to
soften and loosen the wax formed inside the ear. It can be directly applied
into the ear as per the direction of the doctor. It should not be used
continuously for more than four days to avoid complication. While using the
ear drops that contains carbamide peroxide one should avoid touch of the
dropper tip to avoid contamination.
If not used properly this medicine may cause problems like ear drainage, ear
pain, rash and irritation in the ear. If any of these side effects appear
after the use of the medicine one should have to consult a medical
practitioner immediately. This is a mandatory rule and should be strictly
followed as it could affect your health very badly.
